Ohrid Lake

ohrid prespa lakes map 150x150 Ohrid LakeLake Ohrid is located between southwest region of the Republic Of Macedonia and eastern Albania. Lake Ohrid is the oldest lake in Europe with over 200 endemic species (Ohrid Trout, European Eel,..). Since 1979 it is UNESCO World Heritage site. It is 30.4 km long and 14.8 km wide with maximum depth of 288m which makes it deepest lake on Balkans. Surface is 358 km2. On lake shores are placed three cities: Ohrid and Struga (Macedonia) Pogradec (Albania), there also few fishing villages, altough tourism becomes more significant parts of their income. Ohrid lake has great blue color so most of Macedonian like to think it is his sea, and many travel there on summer vacation. Lake Ohrid has 40 tributaries which are mainly creeks and rivers which flow is only temporarily during heavy rains and melting of the snow from the surrounding high mountains. popoav0005 150x150 PopocatepetlPopocatepetl is the second highest mountain in Mexico with height of 5426 m. It is also an active volcano. Popocatepetl is located 70 km southeast of Mexico City. Popocatepetl is visible from Mexico City if the days are bright. It is the one of the most active volcanoes in Mexico with over 20 eruptions in last 500 years. In December 2000 volcano had the largest eruption in last 1000 years, but people from dangerous zone are succesufuly evacuated. Also only 40 km far from Popocateptl is placed the city of Puebla with almost 1,3 million inhabitants. 800px machupicchu intihuatana 150x150 Machu PicchuMachu Picchu is a lost city of Inca in Peru. It is located 2400m above the sea level on a ridge above the Urubamba Valley 80 km northwest of Cusco. It was built in 1450 but abandoned a few hundreds years later in time of Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire. Probably most of inhabitants are wiped off by smallpox. City was forgotten for years until Hiram Bingham american historian brought it to world attention. Machu Pichu is now one of the Peru biggest tourist attraction. The Unesco declared Machu Pichu as a World Heritage Site in 1983 and it is also one of the New Seven Wonders of The World.

mirny1 150x150 Mir Diamond Mine   MirnyThis mine is one of the most impressive places on eath. It is 525m deep hole in the ground and 1200m wide. The Mine is an abandoned open pit diamond mine located in Mirny, Eastern Siberia. It was the first and one of the largest diamond pipes of the USSR. Mir Mine was discovered on June 13, 1955 by Soviet geologists Yuri Khabardin, Ekaterina Elagina and V.Avdeenko during the large Amakinsky Expedition in Yakut ASSR. It was operated for almost 50 years, finally closing on April 30, 2004. Mir Mine gave out 2 million carats annually. It takes trucks close to 2 hours to drive from the bottom to the top. The suction above the hole resulted in several helicopter crashes, so all flight above the hole is prohibited now.
