Big Ben is one of the most famous clock towers in the whole world. This tower belongs to the Palace of Westminster in London, and it is settled on its north side. It’s the third tallest clock tower in the world, with 316 foots (about 100 meters). The clock started clicking for itself for the first time on 31 May 1859. Most people think that Big Ben refers to the entire tower with the clock, but that is not correct. Actually, Big Ben is the name for the clock in the tower.

The base of the each side have clock about 7 meters wide (23 feet), they are designed for easy maintenance and cleaning. On all four sides of the clock there is an inscription in Latin: DOMINE SALVAM FAC REGINAM NOSTRAM VICTORIAM PRIMAM, which means: “Lord save our Queen Victoria I”.

The nick name Big Ben is probably after the Benjamin Hall, person who first ordered the bell. But, there is also opinion that wears the name after Benjamin Caunt, English boxer champion. Whether it bears the name of one or the other Benjamin, Big Ben is one of the most famous building and one of the “must see” destinations in London. It is the symbol of London, beside the black cab and double decker bus.

The beauty of the Westminster palace, built in gothic style, and the tallness of the tower with the impressing Big Ben clock has made it to become one of the most visited sights on the world list.

Some other interesting information about Big Ben:
Big Ben appears in many films (The Thirty-Nine Steps, The Avengers, Big Ben Strikes Again…). During the World War I the clock was stopped to prevent the attack of Germans. The major breakdown was in 1976, speed regulator was broke after 100 years. After nine months it was fixed.

The biggest house in the world is also one of the seats of the British monarchy, the Windsor Castle. Windsor Castle is located in Berkshire, England. It is the oldest continuingly occupied castle. It has about 45.000 square meters occupied by the castles floor. It was first established in 1070 by William The Conqueror, so that means that it is almost a thousand years old! It was originally a wooden castle, standing on the site that is now occupied by the so called Round Tower. Most of the England Kings and Queens left their mark in continuous development of the castle. During the times of war, the currently reigning monarch would build more walls and try to fortify it more heavily. During the times of peace, king or queen would add to it more apartments and rooms for fun and entertainment. The famous college, Eton College is located just across the river Thames some 600 meters from the Windsor Castle.

I already mentioned Cornwall in post about Eden Project, but recently I found that Cornwall has much more things to offer to its visitors…

For the start, it is worth to know that Cornwall is a county of England and it is located on the United Kingdom most south-western part. It has population of little bit over half a million people and since the recent economic drops and crisis it is relying more and more on tourism sector.

Unique culture, amazing scenery with mild climate, presents the Cornwall as an excellent tourist location. Cornwall is by three sides surrounded with sea, which gave as a result hundred kilometers of long beaches and spectacular cliffs. Surfers are considering this as a paradise. Beside surfing, main attractions are moorland, century old country gardens, many historic sites like Mên-an-Tol and over hundred of holy wells. Legendary King Arthur (if existed) is probably born on Tintagel Castle on Cornwall. Region has even developed its own Cornish language.

There are some modern attractions too, like Eden Project (already mentioned), which is the world largest biosphere and green house. Eden project is also main attraction of Cornwall.

Whole Cornwall region gets over six million tourists yearly.

Here are some images of landscape and some tourist attractions:

So much to say, thousands words are not enough to describe this city. One of the most beautiful cities on the world. History, tradition, culture, politics, philosophy future,… Everything is there!
Capital of UK and England and largest urban in the European Union (two words so eagerly expected for most of my countrymen’s) with 7, 5 millions of people. Since history of London is so big I recommend that you read History of London article at Wikipedia.
There are bunch of things that are worthy to see in London and I will mention few you can’t pass…
For the start -London museums! London has maybe the biggest number of museums located in one town. In most museums entrance is free.

Buckingham palace. Official queen residency, and of the main royal palaces. Tourist tours are allowed only over the summer months.

The London Eye. The world’s third by size observation wheel, located on the South Bank of the Thames with magnificent view of London.

Tower Bridge. This 19th century bridge is situated by the Tower of London near the City. It contains two high towers and a drawbridge. Visit of the engine rooms is allowed.

St Paul’s Cathedral. Sir Christopher Wren’s great accomplishment, built in the 1666 after the Great Fire of London. Cathedral is known by great acoustics.

Wembley Stadium. Primarily a football venue, but is used for music concerts and various sports events.

Palace of Westminster and Big Ben. The location of the United Kingdom parliament and Unesco World Heritage site

I will also skip accommodation sector. More information you can find on London City Hotels Page or on London Wikitravel article.

London also has many sports events. Most known is Wimbledon tennis tournament, various cricket and rugby tournaments. There are 13 soccer clubs, which of whom five are mega popular Arsenal, Chelsea, Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United.

London has 5 big airports of which Heathrow is most known. Heathrow is UK and Europe largest airport, and if you count number of passengers it is the also world busiest airport. If there you should not miss London buses and black cabs…

I did not forget this blog, but I am very weak with my spare time. On top of that I entered to Sulumits Retsambew SEO contest, and all my free time is there.

Anyway yesterday I was looking some texts about UK and found their Eden Project.
It is giant greenhouse, world largest one, , located near Ashburnham Insurance. Near the town St. Austin on Cornwall, England. Complex is consisting from large number of domes where each presents one biome and the core. There is Tropical Rain Forest biome, Mediterranean biome, Outdoor biome, and there is a plan for Desert biome. Project has received lot of criticism to since for example, they are receiving too much public funding, and also over a million people come as tourists here, where almost all are transported here with fossil-fuelled transport, which gives negative carbon footprint. Project use green electrical energy from Cornwall wind power plants and they use only rain water that naturally collect in the pit where Eden is located. Official web page is here – Eden project.
